New Community Garden Opens on West First Street
South Boston's newest public park and community garden opened this week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, lots of sunshine and gratitude.
Hive Park, at 175 W First St. / 174 W Second St., is the product of years of advocacy and planning by local residents, who secured a commitment from developers and the city to build the new public green space in the Lower End.
The park is also home to the West First Street Community Garden, which features 21 brand-new garden plots, water access, built-in composting bins, and a shed to store gardening equipment (coming soon). The garden will be managed by SBNDC.
“All of us at the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation are thrilled to see the community's enthusiasm for gardening these new plots in this beautiful park,” said Donna Brown, Executive Director (pictured at right). “We look forward to working with new and experienced gardeners to grow food and enjoy this beautiful park. Our team is grateful to the City of Boston and Breakthrough Properties for making this incredible green space possible for our neighbors in South Boston.”
SBNDC received 76 applications when it announced in early June the plots would be available. Gardeners were selected by a lottery, and applicants who were not selected will remain on the waitlist in case there are vacancies to be filled.
