Our Work and Impact
From creating brand-new affordable homes for veterans, seniors, and the people powering Boston’s rapid growth, to providing access to fresh, nutritious food, these are some of the successes we are particularly proud of in our 40-year history serving South Boston.
In 2024 we helped almost 200 people stay in their South Boston homes because their rent remained stable and affordable. We have also made progress on our newest project, McDevitt Senior Homes, a development that will transform a former convent into 35 units of affordable housing for low-income seniors.
As housing costs continue to rise throughout the region, and especially in South Boston, even middle-income families are at risk of being displaced from our community.
Contribute to our work and help more families stay in Southie.
O’Connor Way Senior Housing
South Boston NDC and Caritas Communities are developing 46 one-bedroom units of affordable senior housing in the Andrew Square area.
The development is designed for residents to age-in-place and will include a community room, laundry facilities and a patio. The building is scheduled to open in 2020.
Patriot Homes for Veterans
South Boston NDC transformed a vacant former police station on D Street into 24 affordable apartments for veterans and their families.
The project, a collaboration with Caritas Communities, completed construction in November 2016 and includes six units for formerly homeless veterans.
Taylor’s Market Revitalization
South Boston NDC renovated a vacant, blighted historic site into affordable apartments and two commercial spaces that contribute to the vibrancy of the West Broadway business district.
Taylor’s Market is now home to seven below-market apartments and Micro Plant Studio.
Small Business Assistance
South Boston NDC provides staffing and administrative support to the South Boston Chamber of Commerce, which serves more than 75 local businesses with promotional events and networking opportunities throughout the year.
Taste of South Boston
A local tradition since 2002, the annual Taste of South Boston showcases more than two dozen local restaurants while supporting South Boston NDC’s mission. Proceeds fund new construction and the conversion of market-rate to permanently affordable homes, preventing the displacement of South Boston residents.
Youth Development
South Boston NDC provides seasonal and year-round positions for local youth.
Youth workers gain marketable skills learning to operate the South Boston Farmers Market, maintaining community gardens and beautifying West Broadway, raising awareness about environmental issues, and assisting with South Boston NDC administrative operations.
South Boston Farmers Market
The market operates every Monday from June through October at 446 West Broadway, and serves an average of 165 people each week.
Climate Change Impact Issues
Making South Boston a healthier and safer place to live extends to the protection and improvement of our natural and built environments.
Advocacy and Engagement
South Boston NDC, with help from our members, advocate for affordable housing and related issues at the neighborhood,
city, and state level.
