Our History
In 1983, after many years of neighborhood deterioration and industrial encroachment, residents of the St. Vincent’s neighborhood of South Boston came together to take action. They incorporated South Boston Community Housing, Inc. to revitalize the West Second Street corridor and to address the increasing need for affordable housing.
South Boston Community Housing, Inc. completed its first project, the Monsignor Lyons Homes, in 1989. The ten-unit development was constructed on vacant and blighted lots donated by the City of Boston. To date, the organization has developed more than 300 affordable homes and 3 below-market commercial spaces.
South Boston Community Housing became South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation in 1998, to better reflect the corporation’s neighborhood revitalization activities. South Boston NDC is a state-certified Community Development Corporation and federal tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.
In addition to affordable housing development, SBNDC has provided technical assistance, networking and promotional opportunities, and lending referrals to small businesses, founded the Broadway Beautification program that developed into Southie Trees, operates the South Boston Farmers Market every Monday from June through October, and in 2019 launched the Climate Action Partners initiative.
Today, South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation is a group of local residents and stakeholders committed to maintaining South Boston’s character as an affordable, safe, working class community.
