Giving back to his community
John Lurz makes impact with monthly gifts
John Lurz, a South Boston resident and literature professor at Tufts University, is a committed monthly donor to South Boston NDC.
“It seems like a really easy way to feel like I'm contributing rather than just taking from my community and the things that it has to offer,” he said.
John and his partner, Arturo Ramos, moved to South Boston over a decade ago, purchasing a home and immersing themselves in the community. Coming from outside of New England, John didn't know much about South Boston beyond its reputation, but he quickly became invested in its growth and well-being. Living close to public housing, he was mindful of his role as a gentrifier and wanted to ensure that his presence in the community was positive.
When Arturo received a buyout from a startup he worked for, they wanted to make sure some of that money stayed in the community. After researching local organizations that were South Boston focused, South Boston NDC came to the top of their list because of its important work preserving and creating affordable housing and fostering a vibrant, inclusive neighborhood.
John, 44, was drawn to the way South Boston NDC orients itself to cultivating and supporting the larger community. “You are doing some of the good work of watching out for everyone in the community.”
He knows that recurring donations are very impactful for nonprofits because they provide consistent support. “I know they help you as an organization to plan,” he said. “It’s easier for me, too, financially.”
When he gets his monthly credit card statement each month, it’s a regular reminder that he’s supporting his neighborhood. “I think about the work that you are doing more than I would if I just gave you an annual donation.”
Beyond the financial benefit, John feels strongly about contributing to the community that has given him so much. He and Arturo frequently visit Castle Island with their dog, Stevie Nicks, and enjoy spending time at the local shops, restaurants, and cultural spots like the ICA in the Seaport.
John credits Arturo, the son of Mexican immigrants whose dad was a union worker, with helping develop his social consciousness and deepening his understanding of the importance of community involvement.
For John, the act of giving, no matter how small, is significant. “Every little bit helps,” he said. “Small gifts are important, too.”
While John would love to give more, he knows it’s about doing what you can.
Thank you, John, for making a difference!
