South Boston NDC Receives Lowe’s Hometowns Grant
South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation has been selected as a Lowe’s Hometowns grant recipient!
South Boston NDC will create a public pocket park and community garden on the lot it owns at the corner of D Street and West Seventh Street, an area of the neighborhood that lacks open space and trees.
“We are thrilled to be selected as one of Lowe’s 100 projects for 2022,” said South Boston NDC Executive Director Donna Brown. “Our goal is to transform this lot into an asset that will provide an environmental improvement for the neighborhood and gardening access to low-income residents.”
This year’s 100 selected projects kick off Lowe’s five-year, $100 million commitment to the communities it serves.
With projects spanning 40 states and Washington, D.C., Lowe's will help restore and revitalize spaces that serve as the hubs and heartbeats of communities, including neighborhood housing, parks, community centers, and much more.
"We're excited to continue improving hometowns across the country by building on our longstanding commitment to serving the communities where we live and work," said Marvin Ellison, Lowe's chairman and CEO.
"With support from our associates, neighbors, and partners, Lowe's Hometowns will address urgent needs in communities, from revitalizing vibrant green spaces to supporting first responders and local heroes, as we strive to make hometowns better for all, including those in real need."
South Boston NDC intends to grade the site and fence the lot, as well as add cedar garden planters for the community gardeners and stone dust paths for ADA accessible access, and plant two deciduous trees and mixed borders of native perennials and shrubs.
This park is part of South Boston NDC’s Climate Action Initiative to become more sustainable and reduce overall environmental impact. “This new park will provide open space, mitigate heat island effect, and provide native plantings to attract pollinators,” Brown said.
“We are excited to share our final project with the neighborhood.”
