The South Boston Farmers Market is growing!

Marissa Hart, the executive pastry chef at Capo, Lincoln, Hunter’s, and Prima, will be bringing baked goods to the market this year, which opens on Monday, June 3.

South Boston NDC’s project to convert the former St. Augustine’s Convent into affordable senior housing is very much in line with the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

According to Nancy C. Barthelemy, Provincial Archivist, East West Province, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, the Sisters’ purpose was to reach out to low-income folks. “Their main mission was always to reach people who are in the most abandoned places.”

The camaraderie among the Sisters of Notre Dame at the St. Augustine’s Convent is a memory that sticks with Sister Eleanor Clancy … from dinners around the table to discuss their day and cookouts on the roof to gathering in the community room at night.

Sister Eleanor, who will be 84 in March, lived in the building on E Street from 1982-1995. She thinks it’s great that South Boston NDC is converting the building, which most recently was owned by the Paraclete Foundation, to affordable senior housing.

Sister Eleanor’s favorite places in the convent were her room and the chapel. “Sometimes I’d go up to my room and just sit down and be quiet.”

Even though it didn't look like it from the outside, the St. Augustine’s convent really was a home on the inside.

“I think the people that lived there … made it a home,” said Sister Peggy Youngclaus SND, who lived in the convent from 1965-1969.

As South Boston NDC prepares to transform the former convent into affordable senior housing, we are talking with sisters who lived there. “I think that’s wonderful,” Sister Peggy said about South Boston NDC’s plan. “I’m so happy that a convent is going to be used as affordable senior housing. I think that’s a great idea. Otherwise, it’s sitting there.
